Intern for Subsidiary Rights

The Subsidiary Rights Department is seeking a motivated intern for the summer. Interest in the legal aspects of publishing is beneficial.

Candidates need to be available 10-15 hrs per week. The position will provide basic instruction in intellectual property rights and training in contracts. There will be some correspondence with foreign publishers. Candidates should be detail-oriented, and possess excellent computer skills with a solid understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel. The internship is unpaid but may qualify for course credit.

Columbia University Press seeks an enthusiastic intern to work in our publicity department in a summer internship.


We seek one person for a publicity internship to work Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer. The start date is flexible, but would not be before Tuesday, June 12th. The end date for the internship is also flexible.

The publicity internship consists of creating and implementing publicity campaigns for selected titles. This can include writing press releases, creating mailing lists, updating the database, mailing out books, electronic marketing campaigns, and archiving reviews. The intern will also have the opportunity to work on social media campaigns for the press, including outreach to bloggers, creating content for the Press’s website, and building the Press’s database in online outlets. Some departmental administrative work is required. This internship offers depth – the chance to learn one specific part of the marketing of a book in great detail. Interns are also welcome to explore other aspects of the Press including editorial, production, and marketing depending on the amount of time they have available and if they are interested.

The internship provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the publishing industry and our interns receive valuable hands on experience at one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious university presses.

Length of Internship: 10 to 16 weeks (seasonal: Summer)

Requirements: Ideal candidates will have a deep interest in scholarship and an enthusiasm for books. Interns must have excellent communication skills, outstanding writing abilities, proficiency in MS Office -especially Word and Excel - the ability to work well independently, conscientiousness in meeting deadlines, and be willing to take initiative.

Payment: The internship is an unpaid position but can possibly be arranged through a students institution for credit. Hours are flexible but candidates should be able to commit at least 8 hours per week.
