Job Opportunities at Columbia University Press

Design Manager

A highly creative individual with a track record of outstanding design skills and several years' experience in book publishing design is sought to be responsible for art direction of the design staff as well as maintaining a strong voice in design issues across the Press.

Solid experience with InDesign, Quarkxpress, Adobephotoshop and Adobeillustrator preferred as well as an excellent portfolio with examples of book work that demonstrates a strong typographic sensibility. Experience with a range of book types: trade, text, and professional; in many disciplines such as the sciences, social sciences, and humanities is also sought.

Must be able to work in a deadline-driven environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands.

A Bachelor’s of Fine arts or related field preferred.

Editorial Intern for Fall 2008 (History and Political Science)

Assist busy acquisitions editorial department of Columbia University Press in Lincoln Center area office. Duties include manuscript rejection letters, sending book reviews to authors, soliciting permission for artwork, processing contracts, Internet and library research, and filing. Student should possess office work experience, be detail oriented, and able to work well with people and independently. Those interested in book publishing are strongly encouraged to apply.

The internship is unpaid and is two full days per week (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one hour lunch break) starting immediately through late December.

Editorial Intern for Fall 2008 (Humanities)

Intern will work in editorial department. Duties include routine correspondence with authors, copying, filing, drafting descriptive memos about manuscripts under review, drafting contracts, preparing manuscripts for production, as well as soliciting permission for illustrations and blurbs. Interest in the Humanities a plus.

Length of Internship: Fall Semester

Requirements: Student must be eligible for school credit
