We are looking to acquire new titles across a broad range of the sciences. Generally we look to sign course texts, reference works, scholarly monographs and works of general interest to a motivated readership across disciplines. As a rule, we are not interested in memoirs, biographies, or edited collections arising out of meetings.
In the fields of Sustainability, Earth, and Environmental Sciences we look for new titles that will serve the needs of scholars and students as well as appeal to general readers. Recent titles include Sustainability Management: Lessons from and for New York City, America, and the Planet by Steven Cohen, Disaster Deferred: How New Science Is Changing our View of Earthquake Hazards in the Midwest by Seth Stein, The Inquisition of Climate Science by James W. Powell, and The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines by Michael Mann to be published in early 2012.
The Press has a long established and distinguished series in Evolution and Paleobiology. Past authors include Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ernst Mayr, Richard Lewontin, George Gaylord Simpson, and Niles Eldredge. Recent titles include Triassic Life on Land: The Great Transition by Hans-Dieter Sues and Nicholas C. Fraser, Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why It Matters by Donald R. Prothero, and Dogs: Their Fossil History and Evolution by Xiaoming Wang and Richard Tedford. We are committed to publishing significant and beautiful works in these fields of science.
Neuroscience is a new area of publishing for the Press. We seek to build a series of forward looking titles that complements the strength Columbia University has in this dynamic area. Our first two titles published in late 2011 are The Origins of Schizophrenia edited by Alan Brown and Paul Patterson and Neurogastronomy: How the Brain Creates Flavor and Why it Matters by Gordon M. Shepherd. We strongly encourage new submissions from investigators and scholars who study the brain, mind, and behavior.
A final area where we seek new authors and titles includes basic Biomedical Science and Public Health, especially at the intersection of science, society, and policy outcomes. Notable recent titles The Quest for the Cure: The Science and Stories Behind the Next Generation of Medicines by Brent Stockwell, Genetic Justice: DNA Data Banks, Criminal Investigations, and Civil Liberties by Sheldon Krimsky and Tania Simoncelli, Craving Earth: Understanding Pica--the Urge to Eat Clay, Starch, Ice, and Chalk by Sera Young, and Vaccines and Your Child: Separating Fact from Fiction by Paul Offit and Charlotte Moser.
