Patrick Fitzgerald, Publisher for the Life Sciences

I am looking to acquire new titles across a broad range of life sciences including Ecology, Conservation Biology, and Environmental Sustainability; Evolution and Paleobiology; the Neurosciences; and certain areas of Public Health and Biomedical Science. Generally I look to sign course texts, reference works, scholarly monographs and works of general interest to a motivated readership across disciplines. As a rule, I am not interested in memoirs, biographies, or edited collections arising out of meetings.

In the fields of Ecology, Conservation Biology and Environmental Sustainability I am looking for new titles that will serve the needs of scholars and students as well as appeal to general readers. Recent titles include Useless Arithmetic: Why Environmental Scientists Can’t Predict the Future by Orrin Pilkey and Linda Pilkey-Jarvis, The Earth Machine by Edward Mathez and James Webster, Environment, Power and Society for the 21st Century by Howard T. Odum, Humanity’s Footprint by Walter Dodds, and Nature in Fragments by Elizabeth A. Johnson and Michael W. Klemens.

The Press has had a long established and distinguished series in Evolution and Paleobiology. Past authors include Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ernst Mayr, Richard Lewontin and George Gaylord Simpson. Recent titles include Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why It Matters by Donald R. Prothero, Mammals from the Age of Dinosaurs by Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska, Richard Cifelli, and Zhe-Xi Luo, Human Ecology of Beringia by John Hoffecker and The Northern Adriatic Ecosystem: Deep Time in a Shallow Sea by Frank H. McKinney. Our books are often illustrated by leading artists such as Mauricio Anton or Carl Buell. I invite your inquiries about new projects.

Neurobiology is a new area of acquisition for the Press. I seek to establish a series of forward looking titles that complements the strength Columbia University has in this dynamic area. I am particularly interested in how the Neurosciences can elucidate and contribute to other academic areas such as Art, Music, Literature, Economics and the Social Sciences. Also, I seek to develop titles of broad significance from active scientists and senior investigators. Recent titles include The War of the Soups and the Sparks by Elliot Valenstein and Memory and Emotion by James McGaugh.

A final area of acquiring in our science program is in Public Health and the Biomedical Sciences, especially in regards to the intersection of science, society, and policy outcomes. A recent title of note is Toxic Exposures: Contested Illnesses and the Environmental Health Movement by Phil Brown. Forthcoming titles in include False Prophets: The Vaccine-Autism Controversy by Paul Offit and Hyping Health Risks: Environmental Hazards in Daily Life and the Science of Epidemiology by Geoffrey C. Kabat.
