Asian literature in translation formed the bedrock of Columbia’s list in Asian Studies for close to 60 years. The ideal translation – either premodern or modern – has a solid grounding in scholarship and provides a new understanding of an essential source, or makes a canonical work of history, philosophy, or fiction accessible in literary English to students and general readers. We also publish select high-quality works of original scholarship and general-interest books in premodern and modern Asian culture, which contextualize the classics. Global, transnational, and interdisciplinary approaches are welcomed. Many but not all books are in the series Translations from the Asian Classics or Weatherhead Books on Asia.
Through the Russian Library series, we publish new translations of significant works of Russian literature, particularly those not yet available in English. Building off the Press’s longstanding strength in Asian translations and more recent publications in global modernism, the series recognizes the integral place of the Russian literary tradition in the world.
